Scoop: Tokina to Announce 70-200 f/4 Lens at CP+

Tokina Japan announced earlier today a list of some of the products which will be on display at the upcoming CP+ show in Yokohama next week. The most interesting reveal will be a new 70-200mm f/4 lens – which will be an important new lens for Nikon users who currently do not have a similar lens (either by Nikon itself or via third party manufacturers).

The new lens was announced (half officially) by Tokina (see the Japanese translation via Google) with the following specifications:

  • Focal length: 70-200mm
  • Aperture: F4
  • Full frame coverage (FX)
  • Minimum focusing distance: 1.0m
  • Diameter: 80mm
  • Length: 168mm
  • Weight:  TBD
  • Ultrasonic motor
  • built-in image stabilization
  • Price/availability: TBD

Although the exact name of the upcoming lens was not specified it is known that it will be from the professional Tokina lens line (ATX PRO) and if existing Tokina build quality is something we can count on, it will be a very high-quality built lens (hopefully with similar optics to match). Currently there is no price or availability listed by Tokina but we can hope that the new lens will not be priced much higher than the equivalent Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM (currently going for around 1100-1200$) and in either case will be much more affordable than Nikon's pro – AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II (which retails for around 2300-2400$). This might also trigger Nikon to develop its own 70-200mm f/4 lens – so far neither it nor Sigma or Tamron had a answer to the Canon f/4 pro line. It is also worth noting that this new lens will have both an Ultrasonic motor and image stabilization – two fairly new features on the Tokina line up which put the small Japanese manufacturer on more or less the same level of technology offering as the big players on the market.

Other than the 70-200mm f/4, Tokina will also have a new 300mm mirror lens for Micro 4/3 with the following specs:

  • Focal Length: 300mm (equivalent version 35mm: equivalent 600mm)
  • Aperture: F6.3 (fixed for reflex type)
  • Length: 66mm
  • Diameter: 66mm
  • Filter size: 55mm
  • Weight: Less than 300g
  • Manual Focus
  • Remarks: Equipped with distance encoder, can communicate with the body. (Exif, lens information, etc.)

Finally the already announced AT-X 116 PRO DX II will also be shown at the CP+ Tokina booth:

If you are planing to visit CP+ in Yokohama Japan between the 9-12 of February (or know somebody who will) and are willing to help us bring some images from the show please contact us.
