Earlier today two important players in the medium format market announced that they are joining forces to create a unified brand. The Japanese manufacturer Mamiya Digital Imaging and the Israeli Leaf Imaging created a new entity called “Mamiya Leaf”. MegaPixel had a quick talk with Leaf about the move.

According to the joint announcement published today: The new “Mamiya Leaf” brand represents a synergy of the best that the two companies can offer as highly competent suppliers of comprehensive, fully integrated high-end digital photography systems comprising digital camera backs, bodies and lenses. Together, the companies are focusing on delivering new Mamiya Leaf camera systems. Unified support from worldwide Mamiya Leaf partners/distributors is also expected to be a major advantage for photographers; they will now be able to enjoy one stop expert service for all of the various components of a Mamiya Leaf medium format digital camera system.

Both Leaf and Mamiya are part of the Phase One “group” and compete against the Swedish manufacturer Hasselblad on control over the medium format professional photography market. Leaf itself was acquired by Phase One in 2009 which also has shares in Mamiya.

This represent another major move in the photo industry in recent months after the Japanese manufacturer Ricoh took control of the imaging division of Pentax in July 2011 and more recently the U.S. company Blackstone – acquired significant shares in Leica. It also seems likely that we shall continue to see changes in the market as companies such as Olympus and Kodak will try to resolve their financial crisis in the next few months.

We had a quick talk with Ziv Argov – the Director of Marketing and Product Management at Leaf to clarify some questions about the nature of the new brand and the future of both companies:

Q: Can you explain the nature of the combined brand?

A: We have decided to simplify and combine the Mamiya & Leaf brands, to help strengthen the combined brands’ appeal to the market: Together as one, Mamiya Leaf will be perceived as a much stronger brand in the market – as a competent full range supplier of high end digital photography solutions comprising of digital backs, cameras and lenses.  The new Mamiya Leaf brand represents a dedicated marketing, sales and support organization to satisfy the needs of a broad range of customers — from students and advanced amateurs to professional photographers. Products include Mamiya manufactured cameras and lenses and Leaf manufactured digital backs and will be available as a complete medium format camera system and also be sold separately as components.

We believe that:

  • It is a continuation of two known brands
  • It will deliver a clear message to the market
  • We can do more as one team

Q: What will be the benefits of the new combined brand?

A: One benefit is one stop shopping for products, service and support. Over time, our customers will benefit from the product expertise and synergy in new product development.

Q: Are we talking about the formation of one company – “Mamiya Leaf” and will all future products carry this name?

A: Although Mamiya Digital Imaging and Leaf Photography are now working together under the Mamiya Leaf brand, this does not mean a merger between Mamiya and Leaf as companies. Mamiya Digital Imaging is independently owned, and Leaf is owned by Phase One. However, Mamiya and Leaf products are co-developed and are fully compatible, often purchased together, and this new brand initiative and organizational alignment reflects that fact.

Mamiya products such as camera bodies and lenses will continue to be labeled Mamiya; Leaf products, namely digital backs and software, will continue to be labeled Leaf. They will remain available for purchase as separate components (i.e., customers can buy just a camera body or lenses or just a digital back); the sales and service support will be conducted under the new Mamiya Leaf brand name. The packaging (new boxes) and all marketing material will be joint, including the new website – www.mamiyaleaf.com.
